What does a salesforce contractor do?
The Salesforce contractor role centres on the ability to implement, configure, customise, integrate, and administer the Salesforce platform, which is the world's leading CRM and enterprise cloud platform and one of the most active specialist contracting markets in the UK technology sector. The Salesforce ecosystem is broad, encompassing Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud, Experience Cloud, Revenue Cloud, and the Salesforce Platform itself, alongside a vast range of third-party applications built on the AppExchange. Contract engagements arise across the full project lifecycle: discovery and requirements definition, architecture design, declarative configuration and custom development, data migration, integration with adjacent systems, user training, and post-go-live support and optimisation.
Salesforce contractors are expected to have deep, certified expertise in the specific Salesforce products and clouds relevant to the engagement. Salesforce Administrator certification is the baseline credential and is expected across all configuration-focused roles. Salesforce Developer certifications, including Platform Developer I and II, are expected for roles involving Apex development, Lightning Web Components, and custom integration work. For architecture roles, Salesforce Certified Architect credentials, including Application Architect, System Architect, and the coveted CTA (Certified Technical Architect) designation, are the recognised benchmarks. What is the market like for salesforce contractors?
The Salesforce contract market is one of the largest and most active specialist technology contractor markets in the UK. What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.
