ServiceNow contractors are engaged to implement, configure, develop, and optimise the ServiceNow enterprise platform, which has grown from its origins as an IT service management tool into a broad enterprise workflow and automation platform spanning IT Service Management, IT Operations Management, HR Service Delivery, Customer Service Management, Security Operations, and the ServiceNow App Engine for custom workflow application development. Contract engagements arise during ServiceNow implementations, module expansions, platform upgrades, integration projects, and when ongoing platform development and administration requires specialist resource beyond the capacity of the permanent team.
ServiceNow contractors are expected to have hands-on, platform-certified experience with the specific ServiceNow products and modules relevant to the engagement. For ITSM roles, deep knowledge of Incident, Problem, Change, and Request Management module configuration, including service catalogue design, SLA configuration, and workflow and notification management, is expected. For development roles, proficiency in ServiceNow's scripting languages including JavaScript for client-side scripts and server-side business rules, GlideAjax for asynchronous scripting, Flow Designer for declarative workflow automation, and the ServiceNow REST API for integration work is the primary technical requirement. ServiceNow Certified Application Developer, Certified System Administrator, and Certified Implementation Specialist credentials in the relevant product are well regarded and frequently required. For architecture roles, experience designing multi-instance ServiceNow architectures, managing platform governance across a large and complex ServiceNow estate, and integrating ServiceNow with adjacent enterprise platforms through MID Server and integration hub is expected.

What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.

Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.
