What does a servicenow contractor do?
ServiceNow contractors are engaged to implement, configure, develop, and optimise the ServiceNow enterprise platform, which has grown from its origins as an IT service management tool into a broad enterprise workflow and automation platform spanning IT Service Management, IT Operations Management, HR Service Delivery, Customer Service Management, Security Operations, and the ServiceNow App Engine for custom workflow application development. Contract engagements arise during ServiceNow implementations, module expansions, platform upgrades, integration projects, and when ongoing platform development and administration requires specialist resource beyond the capacity of the permanent team.
ServiceNow contractors are expected to have hands-on, platform-certified experience with the specific ServiceNow products and modules relevant to the engagement. For ITSM roles, deep knowledge of Incident, Problem, Change, and Request Management module configuration, including service catalogue design, SLA configuration, and workflow and notification management, is expected. For development roles, proficiency in ServiceNow's scripting languages including JavaScript for client-side scripts and server-side business rules, GlideAjax for asynchronous scripting, Flow Designer for declarative workflow automation, and the ServiceNow REST API for integration work is the primary technical requirement. ServiceNow Certified Application Developer, Certified System Administrator, and Certified Implementation Specialist credentials in the relevant product are well regarded and frequently required. For architecture roles, experience designing multi-instance ServiceNow architectures, managing platform governance across a large and complex ServiceNow estate, and integrating ServiceNow with adjacent enterprise platforms through MID Server and integration hub is expected.

The market for ServiceNow contractors is notably active and consistently well-paying specialist technology contractor markets in the UK. The platform's growth from an ITSM tool into a broad enterprise automation and workflow platform has significantly expanded the addressable contract market over the past five years. Financial services, utilities, large corporates, and the public sector are among the most consistent buyers of ServiceNow contract resource. Rates are competitive with Salesforce and other enterprise platform contracting markets, with senior ServiceNow architects and developers commanding rates at the premium end of the enterprise technology contracting market.
What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.

What servicenow roles are usually Outside IR35?
ServiceNow contracts show a fairly even IR35 split, with around 45% sitting outside among those specifying status. Implementation projects, building new ServiceNow modules, migrating from legacy ITSM tools, or configuring CMDB and service catalogue solutions, create engagements with defined go-live dates. ServiceNow partner organisations and mid-market companies adopting the platform generate the strongest outside IR35 demand. CSA or CIS certifications and experience with specific ServiceNow modules are the standard requirements.
