Summary: The Data Protection & Commercial Counsel will provide essential legal support to a higher education institution in London, focusing on data protection and commercial matters. This role involves advising on privacy issues, drafting contracts, and managing training related to data protection. The position is integral to the Legal team and aims to ensure compliance with regulatory standards while supporting the institution's mission. The ideal candidate will be a qualified solicitor with relevant experience in the not-for-profit sector.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provision of comprehensive advice on privacy and data protection issues
- Reviewing, drafting & negotiating Data Processing Agreements (DPAs)
- Advising commercial and non-commercial stakeholders on potential impacts
- Horizon scanning for changes and updates in the regulatory landscape
- Liaising with the Data Protection Officer (DPO) and data protection team on complex operational escalations
- Drafting, reviewing & negotiating general commercial contracts including IT, SaaS, IP, and consultancy agreements
- Managing privacy and data protection training for staff
- Representing the organisation in any privacy-related inquiries or investigations
Key Skills:
- Qualified solicitor in England & Wales with an up-to-date practising certificate
- Approximately 4 years PQE
- Experience in a similar role within the not-for-profit sector
- Knowledge of data protection advisory
- Strong commercial contract drafting skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in managing complex projects
