About Our Outside IR35 Business Intelligence Contract Roles
What does a business intelligence contractor do?
The Business Intelligence contractor role centres on the ability to design, build, and maintain the reporting and analytics infrastructure that enables organisations to make informed decisions based on data. The work typically involves developing dashboards and reports in tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Looker, building and optimising data models, writing complex SQL queries, working with data warehouse and data lake infrastructure, and translating business requirements into analytical outputs. BI contractors are brought in to deliver a specific reporting capability, support a platform migration, or provide additional capacity within a data team during a period of high demand or transformation.
Clients expect Business Intelligence contractors to bring centre on proficiency in at least one major BI platform, with Power BI being the most widely requested in the UK market, followed by Tableau and Looker. Strong SQL skills are universally expected, as is experience working with dimensional data models and understanding of data warehousing concepts such as star and snowflake schemas. For more senior or platform-focused roles, experience with DAX in Power BI, or Tableau Desktop and Server administration, is a differentiator. The ability to gather requirements from business stakeholders, translate them into well-structured analytical outputs, and communicate the insights clearly is as important as the technical build capability across most BI contracting engagements.
What is the market like for business intelligence contractors?
Business Intelligence contracting is notably consistently active specialisms within the broader data contracting market. Demand is driven by the near-universal need for organisations across all sectors to improve the quality and accessibility of their reporting. Power BI adoption in particular has driven a sustained wave of BI contractor demand as organisations build out their Microsoft data platform capabilities. The market bifurcates between relatively commoditised dashboard development work, where competition keeps rates moderate, and more complex data modelling and architecture work where experienced BI contractors with strong platform and SQL skills command premium rates.
What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.

What business intelligence roles are usually Outside IR35?
BI contracts show a roughly even split between inside and outside IR35 of those declaring IR35 status. Outside IR35 work in BI tends to centre on implementation projects: deploying a new BI platform, building a data warehouse to feed a reporting layer, or migrating from a legacy tool to Power BI or Tableau. These engagements have a natural project shape with defined completion criteria. Consultancies and mid-market companies that lack in-house BI teams are the most frequent sources of outside IR35 BI work.

Contract rates for business intelligence roles typically range from £400 to £750 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement.
