About Our Business Intelligence Contract Roles
What does a business intelligence contractor do?
The Business Intelligence contractor role centres on the ability to design, build, and maintain the reporting and analytics infrastructure that enables organisations to make informed decisions based on data. The work typically involves developing dashboards and reports in tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Looker, building and optimising data models, writing complex SQL queries, working with data warehouse and data lake infrastructure, and translating business requirements into analytical outputs. BI contractors are brought in to deliver a specific reporting capability, support a platform migration, or provide additional capacity within a data team during a period of high demand or transformation.
Clients expect Business Intelligence contractors to bring centre on proficiency in at least one major BI platform, with Power BI being the most widely requested in the UK market, followed by Tableau and Looker. Strong SQL skills are universally expected, as is experience working with dimensional data models and understanding of data warehousing concepts such as star and snowflake schemas. For more senior or platform-focused roles, experience with DAX in Power BI, or Tableau Desktop and Server administration, is a differentiator. The ability to gather requirements from business stakeholders, translate them into well-structured analytical outputs, and communicate the insights clearly is as important as the technical build capability across most BI contracting engagements.
