About Our Outside IR35 Analytics Contract Roles
What does a analytics contractor do?
Analytics contractors are engaged to extract insight from data and translate it into actionable recommendations that drive commercial and operational decision-making. The scope of analytics contracting is broad, spanning descriptive reporting and dashboard development through to advanced statistical analysis, predictive modelling, and the design of analytics frameworks that enable organisations to measure performance more effectively. Contractors are typically brought in to support a specific analytical project, to build or improve a reporting capability, or to provide additional capacity within a data team during a period of high demand.
The technical skills expected vary with the seniority and focus of the role. Analytics contractors are generally expected to be proficient in SQL for data querying and manipulation, alongside at least one analytics or visualisation tool such as Power BI, Tableau, or Looker. For roles involving more advanced analysis, experience with Python or R for statistical modelling and data manipulation is increasingly expected. The ability to design clean, interpretable dashboards and to communicate analytical findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders is as important as technical skill in most analytics contracting engagements. Domain experience in areas such as marketing analytics, financial analytics, or operational analytics can significantly increase the range of opportunities available and the rate a contractor can command.
What is the market like for analytics contractors?
The analytics contracting market is large and active, driven by the continued growth in data volumes and the increasing expectation among leadership teams that decisions should be evidence-based. Demand is strong across financial services, retail, e-commerce, healthcare, and the public sector. The market has bifurcated, with strong demand at both the BI and reporting end where Power BI and Tableau skills are consistently sought, and at the more advanced analytics end where Python-based modelling capabilities are required. Rates at the senior analytics level have been supported by competition for professionals who can combine technical depth with commercial storytelling ability.
What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.

What analytics roles are usually Outside IR35?
Around 45% of analytics contracts with a stated IR35 status sit outside. Analytics engagements often have a natural project shape: build a customer segmentation model, develop a pricing framework, or create a predictive churn analysis. When the work has a defined question and a deliverable answer, outside IR35 treatment is straightforward. Retailers, media companies, and subscription businesses commissioning specific analytical projects are common sources, alongside consultancies placing analytics contractors with their own clients.

Contract rates for analytics roles typically range from £400 to £750 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement.
