About Our Outside IR35 Azure Contract Roles
What does a azure contractor do?
As a contract Azure, you are hired to design, build, migrate, and manage cloud infrastructure and services on Microsoft's Azure platform. Contract engagements cover a broad spectrum of activity including cloud architecture design, infrastructure-as-code implementation using Terraform or Bicep, application and data platform migrations, Azure DevOps pipeline configuration, security and compliance work, and ongoing platform management and optimisation. Azure is the dominant cloud platform across large UK enterprises, financial services, healthcare, and the public sector, making it one of the highest-volume specialist areas in the technology contracting market.
Azure contractors are expected to have deep practical knowledge of the core Azure service portfolio. Compute services including Virtual Machines, App Services, Azure Kubernetes Service, and Azure Functions are widely used across engagements. Data platform experience with Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, and Azure Data Factory is increasingly expected alongside infrastructure skills. For DevOps-focused roles, proficiency with Azure DevOps, pipelines, and integration with GitHub is a common requirement. Microsoft certifications, particularly Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Azure Administrator Associate, and Azure DevOps Engineer Expert, are widely held in the contractor market and carry meaningful weight in the selection process. Contractors with Azure security expertise, particularly around Microsoft Defender, Sentinel, and Entra ID, are in particularly strong demand as organisations mature their cloud security posture.
What is the market like for azure contractors?
The market for Azure contractors is one of the largest and most active segments of the UK technology contracting market, reflecting Microsoft's dominant position across enterprise, public sector, and financial services clients. Demand continues to be driven by cloud migration programmes, Azure DevOps adoption, and the growing use of Azure-native data and AI services including Azure OpenAI. Public sector Azure work, while frequently inside IR35, generates a high volume of contract roles across central government and the NHS. Rates have remained robust, with Azure security and data platform specialists commanding premiums above the general Azure contractor market.
What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.
On QualityContracts.co.uk, approximately 28% of roles with a stated IR35 status are classified as outside IR35. The proportion varies by sector and role type, with some disciplines seeing a significantly higher or lower share of outside IR35 opportunities. Each listing on this page displays its IR35 status where provided by the hiring organisation.
What azure roles are usually Outside IR35?
Azure contracts show an even split between inside and outside IR35 with a stated status. Outside IR35 Azure work is concentrated in migration projects, environment builds, and architecture engagements with tangible output. Microsoft partner organisations, consultancies, and mid-market businesses adopting Azure for the first time are common sources. The breadth of the Azure platform means outside IR35 engagements can range from pure infrastructure work through to data platform builds and application modernisation.
How much do azure contractors usually earn when working Outside IR35?
Contract rates for azure roles typically range from £500 to £900 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Rates shown are for outside IR35 engagements and reflect the gross day rate paid to the contractor's limited company before any personal tax obligations.
