What does a aws contractor do?
Organisations bring in AWS contractors to design, build, migrate, and manage cloud infrastructure and services on the AWS platform. Contract engagements span a wide range of activities including cloud architecture design, infrastructure-as-code implementation, application migration from on-premise to AWS, cost optimisation, security hardening, and the ongoing management and automation of AWS environments. AWS contractors are in demand across virtually every sector, with financial services, retail, media, technology, and the public sector being particularly active users of AWS expertise on a contract basis.
AWS contractors are expected to have deep, practical knowledge of the core AWS service portfolio, including compute services such as EC2 and Lambda, storage including S3 and EBS, networking including VPC and Route 53, and managed database services. Infrastructure-as-code skills using Terraform or AWS CloudFormation are widely expected, as is experience with containerisation and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes or AWS ECS and EKS. For security-focused roles, knowledge of AWS IAM, security groups, and compliance frameworks is essential. AWS certifications, particularly Solutions Architect Associate or Professional, are widely held in the contractor market and are frequently listed as requirements in job specifications. DevOps experience and familiarity with CI/CD pipelines are expected across most senior engagements.
What is the market like for aws contractors?
The AWS contract market is one of the largest and most consistently active segments of the UK technology contracting market. AWS remains the leading cloud platform by market share in the UK, and the volume of cloud migration, modernisation, and optimisation work continues to generate strong contractor demand. What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.

Technology companies, digital agencies, and organisations moving workloads to AWS frequently engage contractors for specific phases of their cloud journey. Multi-service experience across compute, networking, data, and security within the AWS ecosystem is the baseline expectation.

Contract rates for aws roles typically range from £550 to £950 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement.
