UI Designer contractors are expected to be expert Figma users, including the ability to build comprehensive, well-organised component libraries with properly named tokens, variants, and auto-layout, and to produce high-fidelity design specifications that give engineering teams everything they need to implement interfaces accurately. Strong visual design fundamentals, including a sophisticated understanding of typography, colour theory, visual hierarchy, and motion design for interactive states, are expected alongside the Figma technical proficiency. Experience with design systems, including both building new systems from scratch and contributing to established systems like Google Material, Apple HIG-inspired systems, or bespoke enterprise design languages, is expected for most professional UI Designer contractor roles.
