About Our Outside IR35 Graphic Designer Contract Roles
What does a graphic designer contractor do?
Graphic Designer contractors are engaged to create visual communications across print and digital media, developing the imagery, layouts, typography, and brand assets that represent an organisation to its audiences. Contract engagements arise across advertising and creative agencies, in-house marketing and brand teams, publishing organisations, corporate communications functions, and any business that produces significant volumes of designed material. The work varies by specialism and client: some graphic designers focus on brand identity and corporate communications; others on campaign and advertising creative; others on editorial and publication design; and others on packaging or environmental graphics. Most graphic design contracts are project-based, tied to a campaign, launch, rebrand, or publication programme.
The technical skills expected of Graphic Designer contractors centre on proficiency in the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign being the core tools across most graphic design disciplines. A strong aesthetic sensibility, sound understanding of typography, colour theory, and layout principles, and the ability to work within brand guidelines to produce consistent, high-quality visual output are the foundation of any graphic design contracting role. For roles with a digital focus, familiarity with Figma or Adobe XD for screen-based design is increasingly expected. For packaging or print-focused roles, knowledge of print production processes, pre-press requirements, and colour management is additionally important. A portfolio demonstrating the quality and range of previous design output across relevant categories and formats is the primary selection criterion.
What is the market like for graphic designer contractors?
Graphic Designer contracting is a large market driven by the volume of marketing and communications activity across UK organisations and the project-based nature of most creative work. The market is competitive, particularly at the generalist end, where the supply of capable graphic designers is broad. Contractors who develop recognised strength in specific categories such as brand identity, motion graphics, publication design, or packaging, or who bring strong digital design skills alongside traditional graphic design capability, are in a considerably stronger commercial position. Rates vary considerably by specialism and seniority, with senior brand and campaign designers working for major agencies or large in-house teams commanding rates well above the generalist graphic design contracting market.
What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.
On QualityContracts.co.uk, approximately 28% of roles with a stated IR35 status are classified as outside IR35. The proportion varies by sector and role type, with some disciplines seeing a significantly higher or lower share of outside IR35 opportunities. Each listing on this page displays its IR35 status where provided by the hiring organisation.
What graphic designer roles are usually Outside IR35?
Graphic design is one of the creative disciplines most naturally suited to outside IR35 working. The work produces tangible outputs, whether brand assets, marketing collateral, packaging, or digital design, and most engagements can be structured around a defined creative brief. Freelance graphic designers have operated through limited companies for decades. Agencies, brands, and publishers commissioning specific design projects are the standard route to market. Adobe Creative Suite proficiency is assumed; specialism in motion graphics, 3D, or UI design commands a premium.
How much do graphic designer contractors usually earn when working Outside IR35?
Contract rates for graphic designer roles typically range from £300 to £550 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Rates shown are for outside IR35 engagements and reflect the gross day rate paid to the contractor's limited company before any personal tax obligations.
