About Our Outside IR35 Technical Architect Contract Roles
What does a technical architect contractor do?
Technical Architect contractors are engaged to define and govern the technical architecture of specific systems, products, or programmes, making the detailed technical design decisions that ensure solutions are built consistently, securely, and in a way that is maintainable and aligned with the organisation's broader technology strategy. The Technical Architect role is closely related to Solution Architect but typically carries greater technical depth and is more focused on the detailed implementation architecture within a specific technology domain or product, rather than the high-level design of a solution across business and technology layers. Technical Architects are brought in on major technology programmes, cloud migration projects, product architecture reviews, and when a team needs senior technical leadership to make and communicate design decisions at engineering level.
The skills expected of Technical Architect contractors are technically deep within the relevant domain and broad enough to consider the full architectural scope of the solution. Experience designing cloud-native application architectures on AWS, Azure, or GCP, including the selection of appropriate managed services, the design of networking and security boundaries, and the specification of infrastructure-as-code patterns, is widely expected for technology programme roles. Strong software engineering foundations are assumed, alongside the ability to define and communicate API contracts, database schemas, messaging patterns, and deployment architectures clearly to development teams. Experience producing Architecture Decision Records, participating in design authority governance, and reviewing technical designs produced by delivery teams for consistency and quality is expected for senior Technical Architect contractor roles. Most Technical Architects hold cloud platform certifications alongside software engineering credentials.
What is the market like for technical architect contractors?
The market for Technical Architect contractors is a consistently active and well-paying market within the technology contractor space, driven by the volume of technology programmes requiring senior architectural leadership. The terms Technical Architect and Solution Architect are often used interchangeably in the UK market, with the distinction varying by organisation. Cloud migration programmes, digital transformation, and major application modernisation initiatives are the most consistent sources of Technical Architect contract demand. Financial services, retail, healthcare, and the public sector are among the most active buyers. Rates are at the upper end of the technology contracting market, reflecting the seniority, technical breadth, and the governance responsibility of the architectural role.
What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.
On QualityContracts.co.uk, approximately 28% of roles with a stated IR35 status are classified as outside IR35. The proportion varies by sector and role type, with some disciplines seeing a significantly higher or lower share of outside IR35 opportunities. Each listing on this page displays its IR35 status where provided by the hiring organisation.
What technical architect roles are usually Outside IR35?
Technical architecture has a reasonable outside IR35 rate, with around 35% of contracts sitting outside among those specifying status. Engagements scoped around technology selection, platform design, or migration architecture with a defined report or design document as output makes outside IR35 the natural position. The technical architect's advisory role, recommending how technology should be structured rather than building it, strengthens the case. Consultancies and organisations at technology decision points generate the strongest demand.
How much do technical architect contractors usually earn when working Outside IR35?
Contract rates for technical architect roles typically range from £650 to £1100 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Rates shown are for outside IR35 engagements and reflect the gross day rate paid to the contractor's limited company before any personal tax obligations.
