What does a technical architect contractor do?
Technical Architect contractors are engaged to define and govern the technical architecture of specific systems, products, or programmes, making the detailed technical design decisions that ensure solutions are built consistently, securely, and in a way that is maintainable and aligned with the organisation's broader technology strategy. The Technical Architect role is closely related to Solution Architect but typically carries greater technical depth and is more focused on the detailed implementation architecture within a specific technology domain or product, rather than the high-level design of a solution across business and technology layers. Technical Architects are brought in on major technology programmes, cloud migration projects, product architecture reviews, and when a team needs senior technical leadership to make and communicate design decisions at engineering level.
The skills expected of Technical Architect contractors are technically deep within the relevant domain and broad enough to consider the full architectural scope of the solution. Experience designing cloud-native application architectures on AWS, Azure, or GCP, including the selection of appropriate managed services, the design of networking and security boundaries, and the specification of infrastructure-as-code patterns, is widely expected for technology programme roles. Strong software engineering foundations are assumed, alongside the ability to define and communicate API contracts, database schemas, messaging patterns, and deployment architectures clearly to development teams. Experience producing Architecture Decision Records, participating in design authority governance, and reviewing technical designs produced by delivery teams for consistency and quality is expected for senior Technical Architect contractor roles.
