What does a solution architect contractor do?
The Solution Architect contractor role centres on the ability to design the technical architecture of specific systems, applications, or integration solutions within a defined scope, bridging the gap between high-level enterprise architecture and the detailed implementation work of development teams. The Solution Architect translates business requirements into a coherent technical design, selecting appropriate technologies, defining integration patterns, specifying non-functional requirements including performance, security, and scalability, and producing the architectural documentation that guides the delivery team through implementation. Solution Architects are engaged on technology programmes, system replacement projects, cloud migration initiatives, and any programme where the technical complexity of the solution requires dedicated architectural expertise.
Solution Architect contractors are expected to combine broad technology knowledge with the depth to design credible and implementable solutions in the relevant domain. Experience designing solutions across the technology layers relevant to the engagement, whether cloud infrastructure, application architecture, integration, data, or security, is the primary technical requirement. Strong knowledge of cloud platform services on AWS, Azure, or GCP, including the ability to select appropriate managed services and design patterns for reliability, performance, and cost, is standard across the market across most modern solution architecture roles. The ability to communicate technical designs clearly to both engineering teams and non-technical business stakeholders through architecture diagrams, decision records, and technical specifications is as important as the design capability itself. Experience participating in governance processes including design authority reviews and technical risk assessment is expected for senior Solution Architect roles in larger organisations.
What is the market like for solution architect contractors?
Solution Architect contracting is a mature and active and well-paying segment of the technology contracting market, driven by the volume of system design and technical decision-making required across every technology programme. Financial services, retail, healthcare, and central government are among the most consistent buyers. The most in-demand Solution Architect profiles combine strong cloud platform knowledge, particularly AWS or Azure, with application and integration architecture expertise and the communication skills to operate effectively in complex stakeholder environments. Rates are at the upper end of the technology contracting market, reflecting the seniority and breadth of expertise required. Senior Solution Architects and Technical Architects are often used interchangeably in the market, with the distinction between the two titles varying considerably by organisation.
What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.

What solution architect roles are usually Outside IR35?
Solution architecture has a healthy outside IR35 market, with around 40% of contracts sitting outside among those specifying status. The advisory and design-led nature of the role, defining how systems should integrate and evolve rather than writing production code, points toward outside IR35. Engagements scoped around platform selection, integration design, or migration planning for a defined programme phase are the most clearly outside IR35. Consultancies and private sector technology companies generate the strongest demand.

Contract rates for solution architect roles typically range from £650 to £1100 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement.
