What does a application architect contractor do?
The Application Architect contractor role centres on the ability to design and oversee the technical architecture of software applications, ensuring that systems are built to be scalable, maintainable, secure, and aligned with the broader technology strategy of the organisation. The work involves making foundational decisions about technology stacks, design patterns, integration approaches, and data models, as well as providing technical governance across development teams to ensure implementation aligns with architectural intent. Application Architects are typically brought in during the design phase of new application builds, during significant modernisation programmes, or when an organisation needs independent architectural oversight of a complex development programme.
The profile expected for Application Architect contracts is senior and technically broad. Candidates need extensive software development experience across multiple languages and platforms, combined with the ability to think at a systems level and make architectural trade-offs that balance technical quality with commercial and delivery constraints. Experience with cloud-native application design on AWS, Azure, or GCP is widely expected, alongside familiarity with microservices architecture, API design, event-driven systems, and modern DevOps practices. What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment.
