What does a data architect contractor do?
Organisations bring in Data Architect contractors to design and govern the structures, platforms, and standards that determine how an organisation's data is collected, stored, integrated, and made available for analysis and decision-making. The work involves designing enterprise data models, defining data platform architectures including data lakes, data warehouses, and lakehouse patterns, establishing data governance standards, evaluating and selecting data platform technologies, and providing technical governance across data engineering and analytics programmes. Data Architects are typically brought in at the start of a significant data platform build or modernisation programme, or when an organisation needs independent architectural review of its existing data infrastructure.
The core competencies for Data Architect contracting include are broad and senior. Experience designing enterprise-scale data models using dimensional modelling or data vault methodologies, alongside hands-on knowledge of cloud data platforms including Azure Synapse, Databricks, Snowflake, AWS Redshift, or BigQuery, is standard across the market. Familiarity with data integration patterns, API design, and event streaming platforms such as Kafka is increasingly expected as organisations build more real-time data capabilities. Strong knowledge of data governance frameworks, metadata management, and the tooling used to implement them is expected for roles with a governance focus. What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment.
