The procurement contracting market spans operational roles that maintain the flow of goods and services into an organisation, and more strategic roles that develop sourcing strategies, renegotiate major supplier contracts, and lead procurement capability improvement programmes. Contractors are brought in to cover vacancies, manage specific sourcing projects or retendering exercises, support procurement transformation programmes, or provide specialist expertise in particular categories or procurement regulations.
The skills expected of procurement contractors vary by seniority and the nature of the engagement. At the operational end, buyers and procurement officers need practical purchasing skills, familiarity with procurement systems including SAP Ariba, Coupa, or Oracle Purchasing, and the ability to manage suppliers and purchase orders efficiently within defined category strategies.
