About Our Inside IR35 Azure Contract Roles
What does a azure contractor do?
As a contract Azure, you are hired to design, build, migrate, and manage cloud infrastructure and services on Microsoft's Azure platform. Contract engagements cover a broad spectrum of activity including cloud architecture design, infrastructure-as-code implementation using Terraform or Bicep, application and data platform migrations, Azure DevOps pipeline configuration, security and compliance work, and ongoing platform management and optimisation. Azure is the dominant cloud platform across large UK enterprises, financial services, healthcare, and the public sector, making it one of the highest-volume specialist areas in the technology contracting market.
Azure contractors are expected to have deep practical knowledge of the core Azure service portfolio. Compute services including Virtual Machines, App Services, Azure Kubernetes Service, and Azure Functions are widely used across engagements. Data platform experience with Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, and Azure Data Factory is increasingly expected alongside infrastructure skills. For DevOps-focused roles, proficiency with Azure DevOps, pipelines, and integration with GitHub is a common requirement. Microsoft certifications, particularly Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Azure Administrator Associate, and Azure DevOps Engineer Expert, are widely held in the contractor market and carry meaningful weight in the selection process. Contractors with Azure security expertise, particularly around Microsoft Defender, Sentinel, and Entra ID, are in particularly strong demand as organisations mature their cloud security posture.
What is the market like for azure contractors?
The market for Azure contractors is one of the largest and most active segments of the UK technology contracting market, reflecting Microsoft's dominant position across enterprise, public sector, and financial services clients. Demand continues to be driven by cloud migration programmes, Azure DevOps adoption, and the growing use of Azure-native data and AI services including Azure OpenAI. Public sector Azure work, while frequently inside IR35, generates a high volume of contract roles across central government and the NHS. Rates have remained robust, with Azure security and data platform specialists commanding premiums above the general Azure contractor market.
What does Inside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as inside IR35, income tax and National Insurance are deducted at source, typically via an umbrella company or agency PAYE. Headline day rates on inside IR35 engagements are generally higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for the tax and employment cost structure.
Inside IR35 determinations are made where the working arrangements are considered to resemble employment, based on factors including the level of client control, the absence of a genuine right of substitution, and the presence of mutuality of obligation. Since April 2021, the end client is responsible for making this determination for medium and large private sector organisations. Many employers in financial services, government, and professional services assess the majority of their contractor engagements as inside IR35.
On QualityContracts.co.uk, approximately 49% of roles with a stated IR35 status are classified as inside IR35, making it the most common arrangement across the contract market. The proportion varies by sector and role type. Each listing on this page displays its IR35 status where provided by the hiring organisation.
What azure roles are usually Inside IR35?
Around half of Azure contracts with a stated status are inside IR35, driven by government departments, NHS trusts, and large enterprises that have standardised on the Microsoft cloud stack. Inside IR35 Azure work is often operational: managing and optimising landing zones, implementing governance and cost management, and supporting development teams with platform services. The Microsoft ecosystem's dominance in UK government IT means there is a substantial pipeline of inside IR35 Azure work across central and local government.
How much do azure contractors usually earn when working Inside IR35?
Contract rates for azure roles typically range from £500 to £900 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Inside IR35 rates are typically 15% to 30% higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for tax and national insurance deducted at source by the fee-payer.
How many Inside IR35 azure vacancies are there on Quality Contracts?
Over the past twelve months, we have tracked over 500 azure contract roles across the site. Around one third of the roles currently listed on the site fall Inside IR35. Data reviewed up to September 2026.
