Summary: The VAT Manager role involves overseeing VAT compliance and providing expert advice on VAT matters for a large organization. The position requires managing VAT submissions, ensuring adherence to regulations in the UK and Ireland, and driving process improvements. The role also includes conducting VAT audits and liaising with HMRC on various VAT-related issues. This is a fixed-term contract position based in Coventry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of VAT returns.
  • Oversee the preparation and reconciliation of VAT accounts, ensuring they comply with VAT legislation.
  • Manage VAT registrations and de-registrations.
  • Drive process improvements, standardization and automation of VAT compliance processes.
  • Key participation in the project team to implement Avalara for UK legacy reporting units.
  • Provide expert VAT advice to various departments within the organisation on transactions, projects, and business initiatives.
  • Support VAT planning strategies to optimize VAT efficiency and compliance.
  • Stay abreast of changes in VAT legislation and advise on the implications for the business.
  • Identify VAT risks and opportunities, implementing controls to mitigate exposure.
  • Conduct VAT audits and reviews to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Liaise with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on VAT enquiries, audits, and disputes.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders to provide VAT guidance and support.
  • Engage with external advisors and auditors as required.
  • Collaborate with the EMEA VAT Manager to ensure alignment and consistency in VAT practices across the region.
  • Support delivery of VAT training to relevant teams within the organisation.
  • Develop, administer, and maintain VAT compliance procedures.
  • Maintain VAT knowledge within the Financial Services Unit team as well as the Financial Shared Service Centre, ensuring continuous learning and development.
  • Review and improve VAT-related processes and controls to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Implement VAT software solutions where applicable.

Key Skills:

  • Professional qualification (ACA, ACCA, CTA, or equivalent) with a strong understanding of UK EU VAT legislation.
  • Proven experience in a VAT-focused role within a large organisation, consultancy or HMRC.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills with the ability to convey complex VAT issues to management as appropriate.
  • Self-starter and ability to constructively challenge.
  • Broad experience of finance and tax technology desirable.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in the use of VAT software and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • This role will require occasional travel within the UK.
