About Our Outside IR35 Power Platform Contract Roles
What does a power platform contractor do?
Power Platform contractors are engaged to design, build, and maintain solutions using Microsoft's low-code and automation platform, which encompasses Power Apps for custom application development, Power Automate for workflow and process automation, Power BI for analytics and reporting, and Power Virtual Agents for chatbot development. Power Platform contracting has grown significantly as Microsoft has positioned the suite as the productivity and automation layer of the Microsoft 365 and Azure ecosystems, enabling organisations to build custom applications and automated workflows without the overhead of full custom software development. Contract engagements arise when organisations are building specific Power Apps or automation solutions, when a Power Platform Centre of Excellence is being established, or when governance and development standards need to be applied to a sprawling landscape of citizen-developer built solutions.
Power Platform contractors are expected to have practical experience building production-grade solutions across the relevant components of the suite rather than shallow familiarity with all four products. Power Apps contractors need experience building Canvas Apps and Model-Driven Apps, including proficiency in Power Fx formula language for Canvas Apps, Dataverse data modelling for Model-Driven Apps, and the integration of Power Apps with SharePoint, Dynamics 365, and external APIs via connectors and custom connectors. Power Automate contractors need expertise designing complex multi-step automated flows, including exception handling, approval workflows, and integration with Azure services. For enterprise roles, experience with Power Platform governance tools including the Centre of Excellence Starter Kit, environment management, Data Loss Prevention policies, and solution-based deployment practices using managed solutions is expected.
What is the market like for power platform contractors?
Power Platform contracting is a rapidly growing and active market within the Microsoft ecosystem, driven by the accelerating adoption of low-code development across UK organisations seeking to digitise manual processes and build custom operational applications without the cost and lead time of traditional software development. Microsoft's heavy investment in the Power Platform as the automation and application layer of its cloud ecosystem has created a growing and increasingly sophisticated contractor market. The most valuable Power Platform contractors are those who combine deep Power Platform technical skills with strong solution architecture ability and governance experience, enabling them to move beyond simple automation tasks into building complex, enterprise-grade solutions. Rates reflect this technical and architectural depth and sit above the market for general low-code development.
What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.
On QualityContracts.co.uk, approximately 28% of roles with a stated IR35 status are classified as outside IR35. The proportion varies by sector and role type, with some disciplines seeing a significantly higher or lower share of outside IR35 opportunities. Each listing on this page displays its IR35 status where provided by the hiring organisation.
What power platform roles are usually Outside IR35?
Power Platform contracts lean slightly outside IR35, with around 55% sitting outside among those specifying status. Building specific Power Apps solutions, automating workflows with Power Automate, or deploying a Power Platform centre of excellence creates engagements with clear deliverables. Organisations adopting the Power Platform for citizen development and consultancies delivering Microsoft-based digital solutions are the most active hirers. Experience across the full Power Platform suite, including Dataverse, is the standard requirement.
How much do power platform contractors usually earn when working Outside IR35?
Contract rates for power platform roles typically range from £400 to £750 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Rates shown are for outside IR35 engagements and reflect the gross day rate paid to the contractor's limited company before any personal tax obligations.
