About Our Outside IR35 Android Developer Contract Roles
What does a android developer contractor do?
Organisations bring in Android Developer contractors to design, build, and maintain mobile applications for the Android platform, working within product teams or alongside wider mobile development programmes. Contract engagements arise when organisations need to build a new Android application, release a major update, migrate an existing app to modern Android architecture patterns, or when a permanent team requires additional development capacity during a peak delivery period. Android Developer contractors are used across a wide range of sectors including financial services, retail, media, healthcare, and technology companies of all sizes.
The core competencies for Android Developer contracting include centre on proficiency in Kotlin, which has become the primary language for Android development and is expected as standard in the majority of contract roles. Experience with Jetpack Compose for building modern Android UIs is increasingly required, alongside familiarity with Android architecture components including ViewModel, LiveData, and Room. Knowledge of RESTful API integration, coroutines for asynchronous programming, and experience publishing and maintaining applications through the Google Play Store are widely expected. For senior roles, experience with modular app architecture, CI/CD pipelines for mobile, and performance optimisation across a diverse range of Android devices and OS versions is an important differentiator.
What is the market like for android developer contractors?
The market for Android Developer contractors is a stable mid-volume market with consistent demand across consumer-facing sectors and enterprise mobile development programmes. Kotlin expertise is now a near-universal requirement, and contractors with strong Jetpack Compose skills are finding growing demand as organisations migrate away from XML-based UI development. Rates are broadly aligned with other mobile development disciplines, with senior Android contractors who have fintech or regulated industry experience commanding rates at the higher end of the mobile development market. Demand is somewhat lower than iOS in certain premium consumer sectors but remains robust in healthcare and enterprise mobility.
What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.
On QualityContracts.co.uk, approximately 28% of roles with a stated IR35 status are classified as outside IR35. The proportion varies by sector and role type, with some disciplines seeing a significantly higher or lower share of outside IR35 opportunities. Each listing on this page displays its IR35 status where provided by the hiring organisation.
What android developer roles are usually Outside IR35?
Around 40% of Android developer contracts with a stated IR35 status sit outside. Mobile development lends itself relatively well to outside IR35 structuring because the work is often scoped around delivering specific features, app releases, or complete applications. Digital agencies, product companies, and startups building consumer-facing apps offer the most opportunities. Kotlin expertise has become essential, and contractors with experience in Jetpack Compose and modern Android architecture components command the strongest rates.
How much do android developer contractors usually earn when working Outside IR35?
Contract rates for android developer roles typically range from £450 to £800 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Rates shown are for outside IR35 engagements and reflect the gross day rate paid to the contractor's limited company before any personal tax obligations.
