Summary: The Opto-Mechanical Engineer role involves hands-on design, assembly, and testing of mechanical systems within a cutting-edge research and development team focused on cloud infrastructure, AI, and hardware innovation. The position requires collaboration with cross-functional teams to develop precise mechanical systems and rapid prototyping in a dynamic environment. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in motion systems and proficiency in SolidWorks. This is a 12-month contract position based in Cambridge, England.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, source, assemble, and test mechanical systems to support advanced research initiatives.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and refine mechanical requirements.
- Architect and prototype systems with sub-micrometre precision.
- Rapidly iterate on designs in a dynamic, fail-fast environment.
- Contribute to high-impact projects with real-world applications.
Key Skills:
- Expert-level proficiency in SolidWorks, including PDM.
- Proven experience designing and implementing motion systems with sub-micrometre accuracy.
- Hands-on experience with light machining and 3D printing.
- Strong understanding of tolerancing and production specifications.
- Familiarity with optical systems (free-space optics, waveguide/fibre optics, monolithic optical design).
- Experience with CAM for CNC machining.
- Proficiency in simulation tools (preferably Ansys).
- 5 - 8+ years of relevant engineering experience OR Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) + 5+ years experience.

We’re looking for a Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team of experts in optics, electronics, and software. This is a hands-on role in a fast-paced, agile environment where experimentation and iteration are key to success.
