Summary: The Mechanical Design Engineer role based in Huddersfield involves working on detailed design activities within an established engineering consultancy. Candidates must possess active SC Clearance and have significant experience in engineering design, particularly with rotating machinery and power transmission systems. Key Responsibilities:
- Carry out detail design activities to meet the requirements of design for manufacture.
- Perform hand calculations and preliminary sizing of components, including material selection and analysis.
- Engage in CAD activities including conceptual design, 3D and 2D modelling, and create component and complex assembly drawings.
- Check drawings and technical documentation, generate BOM and gear data, and process engineering change control.
- Create deliverable documentation including manuals and maintenance instructions.
- Assess and resolve concession/non-conformance issues, coordinating with other specialist areas as necessary.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to investigate non-conformance reports and develop corrective actions.
Key Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
- 5 years or more in an engineering design role/environment involving rotating machinery.
- Experience in heavy engineering industry, power transmission systems, gears, and gearboxes.
- Strong knowledge of quality management systems and industry standards (e.g., AS9100, ISO 9001).
- Proficient in 3D CAD package for both modelling and drawing, ideally Solid Edge.
- Ability to interpret and create high-quality engineering CAD models and manufacturing drawings, including GD&T.
- Familiarity with structural design practices and methodologies, including hand calculations.

Our client, an established engineering consultancy operating in Huddersfield, require an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their multi-disciplined team. Due to the nature of our clients’ work and timescales involved this role would require candidates to possess active SC Clearance to start.
What the role of the Mechanical Design Engineer entails:
- Some of the main duties of the Mechanical Design Engineer will include:
- Carry out detail design activities to meet the requirements of design for manufacture
- Hand calculations and preliminary sizing of components, including material selection, gear rating, shaft and bearing analysis, rotor dynamics, other drive system elements including structural components, couplings, lubrication systems, relevant instrumentation and control systems
- CAD activities including conceptual design, 3D and 2D modelling.
- Create component and complex assembly drawings.
- Drawing and technical documentation checking.
- BOM and gear data generation and engineering change control processing
- Manufacturing drawings generation with a clear understanding and application of Design for Manufacture principles
- Create deliverable documentation including Manuals, Installation and Maintenance instructions as necessary
- Concession/Non-conformance assessment and resolution – including hand calculations as required, coordination with other specialist areas such as stress analysis etc.
You will work closely with cross-functional teams to carry out the design activities, investigate and analyse non-conformance reports, develop corrective actions, and implement effective solutions to prevent future occurrences.
What experience you need to be the successful Mechanical Design Engineer:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
- 5 years or more in an engineering design role/environment involving rotating machinery
- Experience in heavy engineering industry, power transmission systems, gears and gear box
- Appreciation of bolted joint analysis, shock assessment in relation to geared transmission systems
- Strong knowledge of quality management systems and industry standards (e.g., AS9100, ISO 9001)
- Strong core design skills with first principal methodologies
- Candidate should be familiar with structural design practices and methodologies, including hand calculations to support design.
- Experience in designing mechanical components, parts, assemblies and subassemblies for heavy industry, power transmission systems, gear and Gear box
- Knowledge about subsystems that impact the mechanical design / layout of the design.
- Proficient in 3D CAD package for both modelling and drawing, ideally Solid Edge
- Ability to interpret and create high quality engineering CAD models and manufacturing drawings, including GD&T
