Summary: The Head of Insurance Risk at Direct Line Group is a pivotal leadership role focused on overseeing actuarial reserves, pricing, and claims forecasting within the Financial & Insurance Risk team. This position requires strategic governance and insight to enhance risk management practices across the organization. The role is offered on a 12-month fixed-term contract and involves managing a small team while collaborating with senior stakeholders. The successful candidate will ensure effective insurance risk management and compliance with regulatory developments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading second-line oversight of actuarial reserves, pricing, and claims forecasts, ensuring robust risk management and challenge.
  • Overseeing financial plan forecasts, providing challenge on key assumptions and business strategies.
  • Reviewing and enhancing risk policies, frameworks, and key risk indicators (KRIs) for insurance risk.
  • Producing independent risk opinions on actuarial reserve projections and presenting findings at governance committees.
  • Developing and implementing a risk review programme, proactively identifying and investigating high-risk areas.
  • Providing subject matter expertise on insurance risk across climate risk, stress testing, and capital modelling.
  • Contributing to key regulatory reports, including the Own Risk & Solvency Assessment (ORSA).
  • Managing a small team (2 FTEs), providing coaching and leadership to drive excellence.
  • Developing strong relationships with senior stakeholders, ensuring risk management is embedded in decision-making.
  • Supporting and deputising for the Director of Financial Risk at key governance forums.

Key Skills:

  • Qualified Actuary status (FIA or equivalent).
  • Extensive experience in reserving and financial planning oversight, ideally in a general insurance setting.
  • A strong understanding of risk frameworks, regulatory requirements, and financial modelling.
  • Leadership experience, with the ability to develop and manage a high-performing team.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to challenge and influence at senior levels.
