Summary: The role of Primary Engineer involves providing technical expertise in the design and installation of substation layouts for projects ranging from 400kV to 11kV. The position requires collaboration with a team to ensure compliance with UK standards, while also focusing on value engineering and continuous improvement. The engineer will be responsible for developing technical specifications, conducting calculations, and mentoring team members. This hybrid role is primarily home-based with occasional meetings at the Birmingham office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide substation layouts and associated detail diagrams in accordance with established UK standards and processes.
  • Develop technical specifications and material schedules for primary equipment.
  • Prepare conductor force calculations.
  • Check and approve project documentation in accordance with established standards.
  • Ensure work packages are delivered to project programme, scope, and budget.
  • Provide technical support and develop tender scheme options and related project scope documents.
  • Produce engineering time estimates and support monthly forecasts.
  • Input into design and hazard review meetings.
  • Provide technical support at site when required.
  • Mentor other team members as required.
  • Focus on value engineering and continuous improvement in implementation standards and costs.
  • Strengthen customer relationships through successful design solutions.

Key Skills:

  • Minimum qualification of HNC/HND in a related engineering field.
  • 8 years of applicable experience for Principal Designer or 12 years in lieu of HNC/HND.
  • 5 years of applicable experience for Senior Designer or 9 years in lieu of HNC/HND.
  • Knowledge of Transmission or Distribution practices (400kV to 11kV).
  • Familiarity with industry standard client working practices including National Grid / SSE / SPEN / DNO requirements.
  • IOSH Managing Safely or similar qualification is desirable.

Job Title: Primary Engineer

Location: Birmingham, UK - hybrid, primarily home-based with occasional meetings at the Birmingham office

Role Outline

To provide the technical expertise in the design and installation of Substation Layouts for 400kV to 11kV substation projects.

Job Role

  • To provide substation layouts and associated detail diagrams in accordance with established UK standards and processes through allocated CAD resource locally and in other business units.
  • To develop technical specifications and material schedules for primary equipment.
  • To prepare conductor force calculations.
  • To check and approve project documentation in accordance with established standards.
  • To ensure own work packages and delegated work packages are delivered to project programme, scope and align to allocated budget. Provide comment where required on delegated works.
  • Provide technical support and to develop tender scheme options and related project scope documents.
  • To produce engineering time estimates and support monthly forecasts to complete.
  • To input into design and hazard review meetings.
  • To provide technical support at site when required.
