Summary: The Developer role at Venesky-Brown involves contributing to the ongoing development and support of software products within a public sector organization in Edinburgh/Glasgow. The position emphasizes collaborative software development practices and requires active participation in team events, mentoring, and ensuring high-quality solutions. The role is hybrid, allowing for both remote and office work, and is initially contracted for six months with the possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Continued development and support of products in-line with the product and architecture roadmaps.
  • Demonstrate excellent, sustainable and collaborative software development practice focused on delivering highly readable, maintainable and appropriate artefacts.
  • Actively participate in all team events, leading where specialist knowledge is required and supporting the team to improve their process through inspection and adaptation.
  • Troubleshooting and fixing development and production problems across multiple environments and operating platforms.
  • Engage with the wider communities of practice and interest to share knowledge, technique and experience.
  • Coach and mentor other team members as necessary.
  • Ensure high quality of developed solutions through development and maintenance of unit tests with appropriate code coverage and code analysis using code quality tools.
  • Ensure that developed software complies with non-functional software requirements such as accessibility, security, UI/UX, performance, maintainability and deployability.
  • Routinely use collaborative development practices such as pairing and mobbing techniques in programming, code reviews, system design and requirements analysis.
  • Support and deliver the disaster recovery assurance of digital services, striving towards a sustainable Recovery Time Objective of 2hrs and Recovery Point objective of zero.

Key Skills:

  • Significant commercial experience with AWS including CDK, Serverless (Lambda), S3, API Gateway, Cloud Formation and AWS RDS for Postgres.
  • Proficiency in Typescript (or modern JavaScript) and Node.
  • Experience with Vanilla ReactJS and/or NextJS.
  • Knowledge of Java and SpringBoot.
  • Ability to create excellent quality software collaboratively.
  • Experience working with business stakeholders to understand context and deliver value.
  • Design and implementation of solutions using a service-based and serverless architecture.
  • Excellent collaboration, communication and teamwork skills.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery models such as Scrum and/or Kanban frameworks.
  • Familiarity with cloud monitoring, telemetry, intelligence tools and processes.
  • Knowledge of formal XP engineering techniques, including Pair Programming and Test Driven Development.
  • Experience in defining infrastructure-as-code.
