Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage Air Vehicle Design teams in the development of uncrewed platforms.
  • Oversee the design and development of new UAS platforms from concept to completion.
  • Support validation, verification, integration, and test activities for designs and technologies.
  • Provide support to manufacturing and address emerging issues in design.
  • Ensure compliance with configuration management and change control standards.

About The Role

Lead and manage one of two multi-disciplinary Air Vehicle Design teams encompassing aerodynamic, structural, and mechanical Engineers in the development and delivery of uncrewed platforms and related systems Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager and working closely with the Programme Management Team, the Air Vehicle Engineering Manager will lead a team responsible for the design and development of new and existing uncrewed platforms.

Lead the team to;

  • Develop new UAS platforms from concept through to completion
  • Support validation, verification, integration and test activities for relevant concepts, designs and technologies
  • Provide support to manufacturing, addressing emerging issues, and incorporating appropriate feedback into the design
  • Be responsible for creation and delivery of manufacturing data packs (where appropriate).
  • Follow and maintain and appropriate standards and processes for configuration management and change control (where appropriate)
  • Work with Engineers and wider stakeholder community to identify, assess and prioritise development opportunities to enhance existing products
  • Support the selection of appropriate suppliers and partners, including supporting the generation of technical contract documentation

This is a key role that will enable the rapid development of new aircraft and related support equipment, along with the production and maturation of existing platforms.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership and Coaching

  • Line management and development of the team, including mentoring and developing Team Leaders
  • Generate and manage forward load plans to ensure effective project delivery and staff development
  • Coach, mentor and develop staff including new starter onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities
  • Lead and monitor employees using performance management through establishment of goals, feedback and encouraging employee contribution
  • Work with HR to recruit, interview, select and hire new employees as required

Technical Responsibilities

  • Guide, or lead the team where appropriate, in their technical duties.
  • Provide ongoing technical assurance to projects through life.
  • Establish and maintain tools, standards and processes.
  • Represent the company with customers and suppliers as necessary.
  • Lead major technical reviews, as necessary.
  • Ensure quality and compliance with the company’s policies and procedures.

Project Delivery

  • Assist in the estimation and planning of complex projects in close cooperation with the programme management team
  • Mentor and assist Engineering Technical Leads and Team leads with estimation and planning activities.
  • Support the programme management team, by managing and motivating the team to deliver projects on time and to budget

Health & Safety

  • Create and promote a safe working environment consistent with all applicable company and legislative requirements (e.g. COSHH, HASAW, HSE)
  • Direct the maintenance of a safe and healthy working environment by eliminating hazards, training employees, and promoting safety awareness
  • Health & Safety Coordination – regulations, communications, walk rounds, actions

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience of technical leadership and engineering line management within aviation, defence, or a similarly regulated industry.
