About Our Web Developer Contract Roles
What does a web developer contractor do?
Organisations bring in Web Developer contractors to build and maintain websites and web applications, working across the front-end presentation layer, back-end application logic, and the integration of content management systems, e-commerce platforms, and third-party APIs that underpin modern web experiences. The Web Developer role is broad and encompasses a range of specific technology specialisms: WordPress and PHP-based web development for CMS-driven websites, JavaScript front-end development using React or Vue.js for interactive web applications, full-stack development combining a back-end language with a front-end framework, and the technical SEO and performance optimisation that ensures web experiences are findable and fast. Contractors are engaged by digital agencies, in-house marketing and digital teams, e-commerce businesses, and technology companies across every sector.
The technical skills expected of Web Developer contractors depend on the specific technology stack and nature of the engagement. For CMS-based web development, which represents a large proportion of the total web developer contracting market, experience with WordPress theme and plugin development including PHP, ACF, and the Gutenberg block editor is expected by most clients alongside HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. For JavaScript application development roles, proficiency in React, Vue.js, or another front-end framework alongside modern CSS practices and tooling is the primary requirement. For e-commerce roles, platform-specific expertise in Shopify, WooCommerce, or Magento is typically required alongside general web development skills. Across all web development roles, knowledge of performance optimisation, accessibility standards, and the technical requirements for good search engine indexability is increasingly expected at professional level.
What is the market like for web developer contractors?
The market for Web Developer contractors is one of the highest-volume segments of the broader technology contractor market, driven by the enormous volume of websites and web applications that require ongoing development and maintenance across every sector. The market spans a very wide range from straightforward WordPress and CMS maintenance through to complex JavaScript application development, and rates vary correspondingly. The WordPress and agency web development market is competitive at the standard level, while JavaScript application development and e-commerce platform specialisms command rates more comparable to mainstream software development contracting. Contractors who combine strong front-end JavaScript skills with performance optimisation, accessibility, and technical SEO knowledge are in the strongest commercial position within the web development contracting market.
How much do web developer contractors usually earn?
Contract rates for web developer roles typically range from £400 to £750 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement.
