Materials Analysis is an Oxford Instruments Business Unit that manages our Electron Microscopy and Mechanical Microscopy products, Atomic Force Microscopes, Raman Microscopes and Benchtop NMR Products. We are part of the wider Oxford Instruments Group that also includes Andor Technology, NanoScience, Plasma Technology and X-Ray Technology. We are looking for two UX Designers to join our Software Engineering team, one position is permanent and the second is for a one year fixed term contract with possibility of extension. The Software Engineering team develops world class technical software used in academia and industry to create scientific breakthroughs that create a brighter future for our world. Our software is technical and specialised and therefore needs careful design influence to help make it easy to understand and use.

This role is ideal if…

You have a background in user experience design and are looking to further develop those talents on a complex technical product You like the idea of working in large team of designers, developers, and testers (45 people in the software department) in a highly technical environment You have an interest in desktop development and instrument control, rather than web or cloud development.

Responsibilities:

  • In this position the work is generally supervised and approved by others
  • You will be working with a number of teams to help them deliver functionality targeted at the next scheduled release
  • You will help us maintain good design principles and work within our branding guidelines, but also take a keen interest in UI trends in the market to keep us best in class.

About you:

  • A Science or Engineering qualification. If not, a software engineering qualification then also backed up with formal software training
  • Proven user-centred design and prototyping skills with 2+ years’ experience
  • Proficient in design and interaction software such as Figma or Adobe XD
  • Experience working in an Agile environment with a cross functional team.
  • Proven experience collaborating with product owners and developers to gather requirements and understand user needs.
  • Have a full understanding of UX and UI desig XAML (WPF) Experience
  • Ability to work across multiple projects simultaneously.
