Summary: The User Experience Consultant role involves leading user research and design efforts within a secure defence environment for the MOD. The consultant will engage with senior stakeholders to understand user needs and create user-centered designs, primarily using Figma. This position requires a strong focus on accessibility and collaboration with developers to ensure effective implementation of designs. The contract is hybrid, with a significant portion of remote work and occasional on-site presence in London or the South.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct user research through interviews, workshops, and usability testing
- Engage with senior MOD stakeholders and end users to understand workflows and pain points
- Create and maintain personas, user journeys, and experience maps
- Design wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs using Figma
- Develop and maintain design systems aligned to accessibility standards
- Collaborate with developers to ensure design-to-code alignment (React / TypeScript)
- Document research insights and design decisions using Confluence
- Advocate for inclusive design and WCAG accessibility compliance
Key Skills:
- Strong experience in UX Design and User Research within Public Sector / Defence environments
- Proficiency in Figma (components, prototyping, design systems)
- Experience conducting user interviews, usability testing, and research analysis
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills – confident working with senior users
- Experience with Jira, Confluence, and Slack in Agile environments
- Understanding of frontend development (React / TypeScript)
- Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and performance considerations
- Awareness of testing frameworks such as Cypress (E2E) and k6 (performance)

THE UX CONSULTANT ROLE
As the Lead UX Consultant / User Researcher, you will take ownership of understanding user needs and translating them into intuitive, user-centred designs. Working within an Agile project team, you will engage directly with senior MOD stakeholders and end users, conducting research and turning insights into wireframes, prototypes, and production-ready designs. You will play a key role in ensuring solutions are accessible, usable, and aligned to real-world user needs, collaborating closely with developers to bring designs to life.
