User Designer UI/UX (GDS-aligned)

Type: Contract

Working Pattern: Hybrid (10% on-site, 90% remote)

Location: Oxfordshire

Security Clearance: MoD DV

Rate: Up to £500 per day inside IR35

Role Summary

As a User Designer, you’ll design services that are simple, inclusive, and accessible. You’ll create and iterate prototypes and interfaces that follow the GDS Design System, working closely with researchers and developers.

Key Responsibilities

• Translate user needs into design artefacts, such as prototypes and mock-ups.
• Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including researchers, developers, content designers, and product teams.
• Ensure consistency by applying GDS patterns and components.
• Test and iterate designs based on user research and analytics.
• Advocate for accessibility and inclusive design at every stage.

Required Skills & Experience

• Experience in user-centred design and prototyping tools (Figma, GOV.UK Prototype Kit).
• Knowledge of HTML/CSS and the ability to build or adapt interactive prototypes.
• Familiarity with GDS service phases and the Design System.
• Agile team working and rapid iteration skills.
• Strong communication skills to explain and justify design choices.
