Summary: The Traction Power Consultant will support the design and development of DC traction power systems for the West Yorkshire Mass Transit project, which is a significant infrastructure initiative. This role requires extensive expertise in UK light rail traction power systems and involves both technical and client-facing responsibilities. The consultant will be integral to the design, review, and delivery of traction power systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards. The position is contract-based until December 31, 2025, and classified as inside IR35.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preparing and reviewing traction power technical reports, feasibility studies, and option selection reports.
  • Contributing to, supervising, and reviewing power system modelling using ETAP and/or TRAIN+MCE (Mott MacDonald’s multi-train simulator).
  • Supporting and/or leading the outline and detailed design of AC and DC electrification schemes, including distribution and contact systems (electrical track equipment).
  • Overseeing earthing & bonding and protection studies.
  • Providing multi-disciplinary input across associated systems including Civils/Structures, SCADA, LV Power, Signalling, Signalling Power, and System Assurance.
  • Interfacing with clients through presentations, technical meetings, and stakeholder engagement.

Key Skills:

  • Proven experience in traction power system design, particularly for UK light rail systems.
  • Strong technical knowledge of DC and AC electrification design principles.
  • Hands-on experience with power system modelling tools (ETAP, TRAIN+MCE).
  • Familiarity with protection systems, earthing & bonding standards, and interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Excellent communication skills, with experience in client-facing roles.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative project team.

Salary (Rate): £85.00 Hourly
