Job Description
We are seeking a skilled, hands-on Test Engineer to support the development and delivery of high-quality digital services, enterprise applications and microservices-based systems.
The successful candidate must have practical experience in API test automation, UI test automation and performance/non-functional testing, with strong programming skills in Java and/or TypeScript.
This is a hands-on technical testing role requiring candidates to personally develop, execute, maintain and troubleshoot automated tests, rather than focusing primarily on test coordination or management.
Key ResponsibilitiesAPI Test Automation
- Develop, execute and maintain automated REST API tests using Java with REST Assured and/or TypeScript-based frameworks.
- Create automated functional, integration, regression and negative API test scenarios.
- Validate HTTP methods, status codes, JSON/XML responses, authentication and error handling.
- Develop reusable test scripts, assertions, test utilities and test data.
- Support API testing across microservices and distributed applications.
UI Test Automation
- Develop and maintain automated UI tests using Playwright with TypeScript and/or Selenium WebDriver with Java.
- Build automated functional, regression, smoke and end-to-end UI tests.
- Implement reusable page objects, locators, assertions and automation utilities.
- Investigate automation failures and improve test reliability.
Performance & Non-Functional Testing
- Personally develop, configure, execute and analyse performance test scripts using Apache JMeter, BlazeMeter, Gatling, k6 or equivalent tools.
- Build and maintain performance test plans, including parameterisation, correlation, assertions and test data.
- Execute load, stress, endurance/soak and other relevant performance tests.
- Analyse response times, throughput, error rates and resource utilisation.
- Identify performance issues and work with developers to investigate bottlenecks.
- Conduct other relevant NFT activities, including reliability, stability, capacity, accessibility or security testing, as required.
CI/CD & Agile Delivery
- Integrate automated API, UI and performance tests into CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions or equivalent tools.
- Collaborate with developers, DevOps engineers and other testers in multidisciplinary Agile teams.
- Identify, document, investigate and track defects.
- Participate in code reviews and continuously improve automated test coverage.
Mandatory Skills and Experience
- API Automation: Hands-on experience developing automated REST API tests using Java/REST Assured and/or TypeScript-based frameworks.
- UI Automation: Hands-on experience developing automated UI tests using Playwright/TypeScript and/or Selenium/Java.
- Performance Testing: Proven experience personally building, configuring, executing and analysing performance test scripts.
- Performance Tools: Practical experience with Apache JMeter or equivalent tools, including scripting, parameterisation and workload configuration.
- Non-Functional Testing: Experience conducting load, stress, endurance and other relevant NFT activities.
- Programming: Good practical Java and/or TypeScript coding skills.
- Test Frameworks: Experience developing, maintaining and troubleshooting reusable automated test scripts and framework components.
- CI/CD: Experience integrating or maintaining automated tests within delivery pipelines.
- Agile: Experience working in multidisciplinary Agile development teams.
- API and Microservices: Understanding of REST APIs, HTTP, JSON and microservices-based applications.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Experience with BlazeMeter, Gatling, k6 or Azure Load Testing.
- Cucumber, Serenity BDD, JUnit, TestNG or Karate.
- Performance monitoring tools such as Grafana, Prometheus or Dynatrace.
- Accessibility testing, security testing and resilience testing.
- Docker, Kubernetes, AWS or Microsoft Azure.
- Experience testing large-scale enterprise applications and distributed systems.
- Experience working on UK public sector projects.
- Active SC/DV clearance or eligibility and willingness to undergo clearance, subject to client requirements.
Candidate CV Requirements
Candidates must clearly demonstrate:
Automated API tests personally developed, including programming languages and frameworks.
Automated UI tests personally developed using Playwright, Selenium or equivalent.
Performance test scripts personally built, configured and executed using JMeter or equivalent.
Performance test types conducted and results analysed.
Practical experience with CI/CD pipelines and Agile delivery.
Important
Experience limited to manual testing, test management, performance test strategy or familiarity with testing tools without practical implementation evidence will not meet the mandatory requirements.
