Summary: The Senior Business Analyst role focuses on early-stage product development, emphasizing problem discovery and technical investigation rather than late-stage delivery. This is a senior, autonomous role that demands minimal direction and a structured approach to uncertainty.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead discovery activity to understand context, problems, root causes, risks, and constraints
  • Investigate and analyse technical feasibility, system integration considerations, data flows, and dependencies
  • Work closely with software engineers, architects, designers, and policy or business stakeholders
  • Develop and evaluate multiple options (technical and non-technical), including cost, benefit, performance, and delivery implications
  • Produce and assure clear analytical artefacts such as:
    • problem statements
    • options analysis
    • recommendations
    • epics and high-level features (where appropriate)
  • Support the creation of business cases and material required to secure approval or investment
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences, including senior stakeholders
  • Facilitate workshops and collaborative sessions to explore problems, assumptions, and trade-offs
  • Help shape ways of working within a new or evolving team, contributing to practice and standards

Key Skills:

  • Senior-level Business Analysis experience, ideally in early-stage, discovery-led work
  • Proven experience working closely with software engineers and technical teams
  • Strong technical literacy: comfortable discussing systems, integrations, data, and constraints (without being an architect or developer)
  • Experience analysing and comparing technical options and making evidence-based recommendations
  • Confidence operating in ambiguous, unstructured environments
  • Ability to communicate clearly with senior stakeholders and gain buy-in for recommendations
  • Experience supporting or contributing to business cases or investment decisions

Detailed Description From Employer:

Senior Business Analyst - Technical Discovery & Early-Stage Products

Contract | Hybrid/Manchester | £600 - £650 Inside IR35

We are looking for an experienced Senior Business Analyst to join a formative, early-stage team shaping the direction of new digital products and services. This role sits upstream of delivery, focusing on problem discovery, technical investigation, and investment-shaping analysis rather than backlog management or late-stage delivery.

This is a senior, autonomous role suited to someone comfortable operating in ambiguity, working closely with software engineers and multi-disciplinary teams, and helping stakeholders decide what to build, why, and how.

The Role

You will work at the early stages of product and service development, helping to investigate complex problems, explore technical and non-technical options, and build the analytical foundation required to progress ideas into Alpha and secure longer-term investment.

You will be expected to operate with minimal direction, bring structure to uncertainty, and communicate complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Key Responsibilities

What We're Looking For

Essential Experience

  • Senior-level Business Analysis experience, ideally in early-stage, discovery-led work
  • Proven experience working closely with software engineers and technical teams
  • Strong technical literacy: comfortable discussing systems, integrations, data, and constraints (without being an architect or developer)
  • Experience analysing and comparing technical options and making evidence-based recommendations
  • Confidence operating in ambiguous, unstructured environments
  • Ability to communicate clearly with senior stakeholders and gain buy-in for recommendations
  • Experience supporting or contributing to business cases or investment decisions

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working on the initiation of products or services through Discovery ? Alpha ? Beta
  • Exposure to communication systems, platform integrations, or complex digital services
  • Government or large-scale regulated-environment experience (beneficial but not required)
  • Experience contributing to or building communities of practice or standards
