Summary: The role of Software Engineer in Test (SDET) involves taking ownership of automation, quality engineering, and test strategy for a high-visibility digital platform within a major UK government transformation programme. The position requires designing and building an automation framework, implementing automation across CI/CD pipelines, and leading various testing strategies. The role is contract-based, requiring on-site presence in Birmingham for 2-3 days a week, and is classified as inside IR35. The engagement is set for 12 months and requires SC eligibility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and build a new automation framework within Azure DevOps
- Create a data-driven automated regression suite
- Implement automation across CI/CD pipelines
- Develop test automation for integrations, APIs, and platform services
- Lead test strategy covering integration, API, performance, security, accessibility (WCAG 2.2), and regression
- Own test evidence, metrics, reporting, and quality governance
- Collaborate with architects, product leads, and project managers to define testability and coverage
- Perform targeted manual testing only where automation isn't feasible
