Summary: The Senior Cloud / Systems Engineer role involves supporting critical UK Government infrastructure by designing, deploying, and managing cloud-native and hybrid platforms, primarily using AWS and container orchestration technologies. The position requires hands-on experience with cloud services and a strong understanding of system architecture principles. The engineer will also be responsible for ensuring system availability, scalability, and security. This is a 12-month contract based in London, requiring on-site presence five days a week.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and support cloud infrastructure on AWS (compute, storage, networking)
- Deploy and manage applications in OpenShift/Kubernetes environments
- Ensure high availability, scalability, and resilience of systems
- Administer and optimise PostgreSQL databases (performance tuning, querying, maintenance)
- Troubleshoot complex system and application issues across cloud and container platforms
- Collaborate with architects and stakeholders on cloud architecture and system design
- Support and maintain secure, compliant government systems
Key Skills:
- Strong hands-on experience with AWS services (EC2, VPC, S3, etc.)
- Proven experience with Kubernetes and/or OpenShift
- Solid knowledge of PostgreSQL (querying, optimisation, basic administration)
- Good understanding of cloud architecture principles (HA, scalability, networking)
- Experience supporting production-critical systems
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
