Summary: The Senior Cloud / Systems Engineer role involves supporting critical UK Government infrastructure by designing, deploying, and managing cloud-native and hybrid platforms, primarily using AWS and container orchestration technologies. The position requires hands-on experience with cloud services and a strong understanding of system architecture principles. The engineer will also be responsible for ensuring system availability, scalability, and security. This is a 12-month contract based in London, requiring on-site presence five days a week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and support cloud infrastructure on AWS (compute, storage, networking)
  • Deploy and manage applications in OpenShift/Kubernetes environments
  • Ensure high availability, scalability, and resilience of systems
  • Administer and optimise PostgreSQL databases (performance tuning, querying, maintenance)
  • Troubleshoot complex system and application issues across cloud and container platforms
  • Collaborate with architects and stakeholders on cloud architecture and system design
  • Support and maintain secure, compliant government systems

Key Skills:

  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS services (EC2, VPC, S3, etc.)
  • Proven experience with Kubernetes and/or OpenShift
  • Solid knowledge of PostgreSQL (querying, optimisation, basic administration)
  • Good understanding of cloud architecture principles (HA, scalability, networking)
  • Experience supporting production-critical systems
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
