What does a structural engineer contractor do?
The Structural Engineer contractor role centres on the ability to design, analyse, and oversee the construction of load-bearing structures in buildings, bridges, infrastructure, and specialist engineering assets, ensuring that the structural systems within and around constructed assets can safely resist the forces they will experience throughout their design life. The work spans concept design, detailed structural analysis, specification of structural materials and components, preparation of structural drawings and calculations for planning and building regulation submissions, site supervision of structural works, and inspection of existing structures. Structural Engineer contractors are engaged on construction and infrastructure projects of all scales, from residential and commercial buildings through to major infrastructure including bridges, tunnels, and marine structures.
What sets strong Structural Engineer contractors apart is depend on the specialism and the nature of the structures being designed. Proficiency in structural analysis software such as ETABS, ROBOT, or RAM Structural System for building structures, or LUSAS and MIDAS for bridge and infrastructure work, is expected for design-focused roles. Knowledge of the Eurocodes, including EN 1990, EN 1991, EN 1992 (concrete), EN 1993 (steel), and EN 1994 (composite), is the standard design code framework expected across most UK structural engineering roles.
