Summary: The Senior Project Team Leader will provide specialized management and scientific leadership within the Virology and Pathogenesis Group at the Diagnostics and Pathogen Characterisation Division, focusing on pathogen inactivation and research related to high-risk viruses. The role involves overseeing the development of assays, training programs, and the advancement of X-ray irradiation technology for pathogen inactivation. The successful candidate will also contribute to externally funded research programs and ensure compliance with safety and quality systems. This position is integral to enhancing understanding and response capabilities for high-threat pathogens.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and delegate the development of assays requiring CL3 and CL4 from the V&P team.
  • Maintain and deliver a CL3 training program and assist in training candidates for CL4 work.
  • Implement methods and techniques for developing X-ray irradiation technology for pathogen inactivation.
  • Support the development of externally funded research programs.
  • Manage the provision of reagents and consumables for the project area.
  • Identify and evaluate new technologies to ensure high scientific standards.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor junior staff allocated to the project.
  • Provide reports and data analysis to meet project targets and prepare presentations and publications.
  • Ensure compliance with UKHSA Safety and Quality systems.

Key Skills:

  • PhD or equivalent higher qualification in virology.
  • Extensive experience in wet virology and containment level 2 and 3.
  • Experience in external collaboration, including international projects.
  • Proven ability to develop junior staff and line management experience.
  • Trained and experienced in working in containment level 3.
  • Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Successful track record in project participation and management.
  • Desirable: Experience in X-ray irradiation of high consequence pathogens.
  • Desirable: Track record of successful grant applications.
  • Desirable: Experience in containment level 4.
