Summary: The role is for a Senior or Principal Civil Design Engineer within a fast-growing infrastructure organization focused on utility and social infrastructure projects in the UK. The successful candidate will lead the design and delivery of water and wastewater infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with client and regulatory standards. This position requires collaboration within a multidisciplinary team to provide innovative solutions while mentoring junior engineers. The role is based in Wakefield and offers a hybrid working arrangement.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and coordinate civil and drainage design activities in line with client standards
- Develop design solutions across all project stages (feasibility to detailed design)
- Manage and oversee design delivery, ensuring quality and accuracy
- Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs and maintain strong client relationships
- Support planning, programming, and commercial aspects of projects
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians
- Lead on resolving technical challenges and driving best practice across the team
- Attend and contribute to client and internal project meetings
Key Skills:
- Degree-qualified Civil Engineer (Chartered or working towards ICE Chartership)
- Strong experience in civil design within the UK water sector
- Experience across water/wastewater projects including treatment works, drainage and sewer networks, clean water infrastructure and rising mains
- Knowledge of industry standards such as CIWEM and CESWI
- Familiar with ISO standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 19650)
- Strong understanding of hydraulic design principles
- Experience with WIMES, HazOp / ALM processes
- Knowledge of CDM Regulations and design responsibilities
- Ability to carry out or review hydraulic calculations and profiling
- A collaborative and proactive approach
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to lead by example and support team development
- A solution-focused mindset with a drive for continuous improvement
- Commitment to professional development and staying up to date with industry standards

The Role We are looking for a Senior or Principal Civil Design Engineer with a strong background in utility engineering and the UK drainage sector. You will play a key role in leading the design and delivery of water and wastewater infrastructure projects, from feasibility and concept through to detailed design, construction, and commissioning. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you'll help deliver high-quality, practical solutions that meet both client and regulatory requirements.
