Your new company

You will be joining a well-established, family-owned organisation based at it's modern head office and distribution centre on the outskirts of Preston.

The business operates across retail, manufacturing and wholesale distribution, employing a substantial workforce across the North of England.

Due to ongoing requirements within the finance function, the organisation is looking to appoint an experienced Senior Payroll Officer on a 3-month temporary basis with the potential to be extended.

Your new role

As Senior Payroll Officer, you will support the delivery of the full end-to-end payroll function across several businesses and multiple payrolls.

You will help ensure the accurate and timely processing of salaries, bonuses, deductions and pension contributions, while maintaining compliance with UK payroll legislation and HMRC requirements.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Processing multiple end-to-end payrolls
  • Ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time
  • Processing and reconciling statutory and voluntary pension contributions
  • Completing RTI submissions, P60s, P11Ds and other HMRC reporting
  • Assisting with statutory reports, including Gender Pay Gap reporting
  • Keeping up to date with payroll legislation and supporting required changes
  • Investigating and resolving payroll queries
  • Reconciling payroll-related balance sheet control accounts
  • Producing and posting payroll journals to the general ledger
  • Supporting internal and external payroll audits
  • Producing payroll cost reports to assist with budgeting and forecasting
  • Providing guidance and support to other members of the payroll team
  • Assisting with wider finance and HR projects

What you'll need to succeed

You will be an experienced payroll professional with strong technical knowledge of UK payroll legislation, pensions and HMRC requirements.

Previous experience processing complex, high-volume or multiple payrolls will be important.

What you'll need to succeed

  • A CIPP qualification, equivalent payroll or accounting qualification, or strong relevant experience
  • Proven end-to-end payroll experience
  • Strong knowledge of statutory deductions, pensions and payroll compliance
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Confident communication skills
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines
  • Good Microsoft Excel skills
  • Experience using payroll and financial systems

What you'll get in return

  • A competitive salary of £40,000 to £45,000, depending on experience
  • An initial 3-month temporary assignment, with the potential for extension
  • Full-time hours, working Monday to Thursday, 8:30am to 5:00pm, with an earlier finish at 4:00pm on Fridays
  • An office-based role in Preston, working closely with the wider payroll, finance and HR teams
  • The opportunity to join a large, well-established organisation operating across retail, manufacturing and wholesale distribution
