Summary: The Senior Modern Workplace Engineer at Schroders Personal Wealth is tasked with the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of Microsoft 365, Azure, and limited on-premise infrastructure. This role involves mentoring junior IT Support team members and collaborating with various business teams to translate technical initiatives into effective solutions. The engineer will also focus on enhancing the team's capabilities and ensuring compliance with best practices. This position is a fixed-term contract until December 31, 2026.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain Microsoft 365 and Azure Infrastructure and associated systems.
- Manage Device, Application & Data Management (Intune, SharePoint, OneDrive).
- Oversee Collaboration & Unified Communications (Teams, Exchange).
- Implement Office Engineering and MS365 Product Suite features.
- Automate processes using scripting/coding (PowerShell, Python).
- Contribute to design and development of new solutions.
- Lead implementations and maintain reliable platform services.
- Provide technical support and mentoring to first line support teams.
- Manage supplier relationships and licensing contracts.
- Stay updated with industry guidelines and best practices.
Key Skills:

The Senior Modern Workplace Engineer isresponsible for the design, development, implementation, ongoing support and maintenance of our Microsoft 365, Azure and limited on premise infrastructure (networking, printing and meeting rooms) and associated systems. The role will also contribute to the team's capability to provide subject matter expert services and guidance to other teams across the business and helping to mentor junior members of the IT Support team. Interfacing with colleagues from across the business, the Senior Modern Workplace Engineer will be able to discuss technical initiatives and act as a representative for the Modern Workplace Engineering team. Additionally, they must possess strong communication skills and the ability to assist in translating business requirements into technical solutions. Key Responsibilities
- The role focuses on the maintenance of the Microsoft 365 and Azure Infrastructure and associated systems within SPW whilst also helping the Modern Workplace Engineering team to develop and implement new features and capabilities.
- Responsibilities of the team include:
- Device, Application & Data Management (Intune & endpoint security, SharePoint, OneDrive and Jamf)
- Collaboration & Unified Comms (Teams, PSTN in Teams, Exchange)
- Office Engineering (Telemetry, Add On management & governance)
- MS365 Product Suite (Previously Office 365 - Including but not limited to MS Teams, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business)
- Process Automation, scripting / coding (Including but not limited to PowerShell, PowerApps, GraphAPI, Python)
- Entra ID & Access Mgt
- Defender XDR (Endpoint, Office 365, Cloud Apps)
- Cloud (SaaS, PaaS, IoT)
- Networks (WAN, LAN and WiFi)
- Contribute to the design and development of solutions
- Contribute to the design of new solutions in conjunction with the Technology Architects, supporting through appropriate governance and approval channels
- Make sure that all development is in line with design requirements and technical policy
- Where appropriate select and suggest new components/systems in line with requirements
- Ensure solutions minimise the need for manual intervention and are automated wherever possible
- Work in line with SPW best practises and guide IT Support in adhering to these
- Experience with the Jira and Confluence toolsets
- A customer focussed ethos to ensure customers receive the service required
- Good stakeholder management with the ability to recommend change and contribute towards technical direction
- The ability to self-start and organise personal workload
- A working knowledge of Agile Development Methodology
- Where applicable, work with other colleagues and teams to improve overall service for colleagues and clients
- Adhering to SPW’s risk appetite, ensuring all work is completed within an appropriate risk appetite.
Implementation:
- Work with the change, application, and business teams to lead implementations and maintain reliable platform services at SPW
- Work closely with Lead & Principal Modern Workplace Engineers to plan workload to deliver value from 365 services, unleashing new capabilities and driving efficiencies
- Work closely with technical and support teams and colleagues across CTO, SPW and 3rd parties to ensure solutions are documented
- Take a pro-active approach to minimising outage.
Support:
- In conjunction with first and second line support teams provide an escalation to 3rd line technical support and Modern Workplace Engineering team, collaborating with 3rd parties where applicable.
- Design and implement processes to ensure all managed systems are supportable, available, recoverable, secure (patched) and documented
- Stay up-to-date with relevant frameworks, industry guidelines and best practices.
- Ensure solution compliance with applicable SPW standards and policies
- Where applicable provide support documentation to be used by first and 2nd line teams
- Provide technical mentoring to first line support colleagues and Senior Cloud Engineers
- Assess and maintain the good working state of our Microsoft 365 and Azure platform and ensure efficient and effective use of the platform.
Supplier Management:
- Work with technical contacts at key suppliers ensuring incidents are raised correctly and progressed
- Work with suppliers and wider Modern Workplace Engineering team to introduce new and innovative features to the estate
- Support Service Management and Supplier Management in the ongoing monitoring and renewal of licensing and contracts where applicable.
Qualifications & Skills:
The successful candidate will possess a strong background and experience of designing, building, managing and troubleshooting infrastructure, cloud based solutions and SaaS applications whilst applying an in-depth understanding of best practices and best security practices. As well as a mix of experience and skills in the following areas:
- Collaboration & Unified Comms (Voice, Video, SharePoint, Email)
- MS365 Product Suite (Previously Office 365 - Including but not limited to MS Teams, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business)
- Device, Application & Data Management (Intune, Windows 11 Management)
