Summary: The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will focus on delivering mechanical design solutions for complex projects in the UK water and wastewater sector. The role involves mentoring junior staff, preparing detailed design calculations, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The position offers flexibility in working arrangements, including hybrid options. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in hydraulic design and a strong background in the water industry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Produce mechanical design deliverables that meet safety, quality, and regulatory requirements
- Prepare detailed design calculations and drawings for water industry projects
- Direct, mentor, and develop CAD technicians, junior designers, and graduate engineers
- Prepare scopes of work for subcontract mechanical and electrical design teams and review their outputs
- Liaise with equipment suppliers and manufacturers to develop technical solutions
- Prepare design investigations, technical reports, and specifications
- Ensure designs comply with relevant technical, professional, and industry standards
- Ensure all design changes are fully implemented and formally recorded
- Estimate design hours for project delivery and support project planning
- Attend and present at design meetings, reviews, and technical workshops
Key Skills:
- Minimum of 10 years relevant design experience within the UK water industry
- Significant experience in hydraulic design
- Good awareness of electrical design and control systems
- Degree or HND qualification, or equivalent experience
- Strong IT skills and experience using engineering design tools
- Registered with a relevant professional body and working towards chartership

Project Overview
You will be working on technically complex projects across the UK water and wastewater sector, including:
- UMON upgrade schemes at sewage treatment works
- Pumped storm storage schemes at CSOs and sewage treatment works
