Summary: The Senior Legal Counsel for CCS Projects will provide comprehensive legal services related to major carbon capture and storage initiatives in the UK. This role involves advising on various legal aspects of CCS activities, including real estate, regulatory compliance, and corporate transactions. The position requires collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective legal support for CCS projects. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in commercial law and a strong understanding of the carbon capture sector.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice on all aspects of CCS project activities including real estate, consenting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of legal/commercial agreements for key clients involved in CCS activities.
  • Coordinate internal and external legal services, liaising with joint venture partners and regulatory authorities.
  • Assist with corporate transactions involving CCS activities, including project financing and acquisitions.
  • Ensure internal compliance with company policies and guidelines related to CCS activities.
  • Provide high-quality legal support for financing, acquisition, and divestiture activities related to CCS projects.
  • Manage dispute resolution processes including litigation and arbitration.
  • Support company secretarial activities related to CCS and assist with corporate restructuring as needed.

Key Skills:

  • Law degree with strong academic results.
  • Qualified solicitor/barrister with 5-10 years post-qualification experience.
  • Strong knowledge of carbon capture and storage projects and the UKCS upstream oil and gas industry.
  • Experience in land rights acquisition and DCO powers.
  • Excellent legal skills in commercial law and UK real estate and planning law.
  • Good understanding of the transition from oil and gas to a low carbon future.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; additional languages are a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.
