Senior Java Developer – Full-Stack | Legal Aid Agency (MoJ) | Up to £470/day (Inside IR35) We're hiring a Senior Java Developer to join a major UK public sector programme supporting the Legal Aid Agency, contributing to the design and development of full-stack Java applications and RESTful APIs.
Location: Leeds, Sheffield or London (travel required once a month max)
Rate: Up to £470/day, Inside IR35
Clearance: Active SC clearance required, or strong confidence of obtaining it
Essential: Prior experience working within UK Government or wider public sector is required
What we're looking for:
- Strong, recent experience developing applications using modern Java and Spring Boot (experience with legacy Java versions advantageous)
- Experience developing front-end applications (Thymeleaf and GOV.UK Design System experience desirable)
- Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs, including API versioning (OpenAPI/Swagger desirable)
- Experience with relational databases and data access technologies — SQL, Spring Data JPA, Hibernate (Oracle experience desirable)
- Experience writing unit and integration tests using JUnit 5 and mocking frameworks
- Experience writing automated UI regression tests, ideally using Playwright with Java
- Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, including GitHub Actions and Helm charts
- Experience working with AWS and Kubernetes
- Experience implementing observability, monitoring and structured logging using tools such as OpenSearch and Prometheus
- Strong grasp of software design principles and design patterns for maintainable, scalable applications
- Previous UK Government or public sector experience essential
Senior candidates should demonstrate greater depth across these skills plus leadership and mentoring experience.
