Summary: The Senior Instrumentation, Controls & Automation Engineer will join the Global Technical Services team in Calgary, Alberta, bringing over 12 years of experience in heavy industry, particularly in the Cement or Oil & Gas sectors. This role involves providing critical support for plant operations, leading projects to completion, and ensuring adherence to technical and safety standards. The engineer will collaborate with various stakeholders, manage vendor relations, and implement improvements to automation and control systems. The position requires a strong technical background and leadership skills to drive operational excellence and project success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and address design deficiencies to ensure optimal performance of automation and control systems.
  • Collaborate with contractors, SMEs, and EPCM organizations globally to ensure the success of processing plants.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for plant operators, offering guidance on controls, automation, and system adjustments.
  • Lead the management of EPCM service providers, ensuring technical inquiries are addressed and engineering disciplines are adhered to.
  • Prepare and execute field tests, analyze results, and implement improvements.
  • Work closely with clients to develop project plans and ensure deadlines and objectives are met.
  • Recommend and implement control system changes in partnership with site operations management.
  • Support business development and technical needs across internal teams.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with international vendors and suppliers.

Key Skills:

  • 12+ years in heavy industry, with experience in oil & gas, petrochemical, or similar sectors.
  • Expertise in instrumentation, controls, automation, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience supervising field activities and ensuring safe, reliable project start-up.
  • Strong project management skills, including delegation, prioritization, and driving projects to completion.
  • Bold, adaptable, and willing to take on challenges while learning from experiences.
  • Willingness to travel (up to 25% of the time) to plant sites, fabrication locations, and engineering firms - both nationally and internationally.
  • Degree in Instrumentation, & Controls Engineering or a Senior Instrumentation Technologist with an ASET designation (CET, RET, RPT). Electrical Engineering experience would be a bonus.
  • P.Eng or P.Tech (Alberta, in good standing).
  • Extensive experience with PLC, HMI, DCS programming, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
  • Familiarity with rotating equipment, conveying systems, and hydraulic & lubrication systems.
  • Experience with PLCs, HMI, and DCS systems.
  • Expertise in plant start-ups, EPC project phases, motor controls, control system integration, and factory/site acceptance testing.
