Reporting to the Director of Safety Operations, you will be responsible for the strategic leadership and governance of our South East England operating area. Working closely with the Director of Operations for South East, you will spearhead our Zero Harm initiative across the operating area. You will be a key member of our leadership team, driving safety culture, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering continuous improvement in safety performance. We deliver safety, warmth, and comfort to homes and businesses. Every role, whether in the office or on the front line, plays a key part in this mission.

Here’s how you will contribute…

  • Work closely with the COO leadership team to provide clear safety leadership and strategic direction across the South East operating area, collaborating with other operational areas to drive a unified culture of safety
  • Oversee assurance, governance, and the learning process following incidents, ensuring transparent communication and the implementation of meaningful improvements.
  • Lead and develop the Health and Safety team, ensuring they provide high-quality, robust support to the wider business.
  • Maintain and grow strong relationships with regulators (HSE) and industry bodies to protect SGN’s interests and influence best practice across the sector.
  • Champion a culture of safety excellence, ensuring that our Zero Harm goals are integrated into every aspect of our operational delivery.

What You Will Need

You will hold (or be working toward) a NEBOSH Diploma or an equivalent Level 6 Health and Safety qualification. Chartered membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) is highly preferred. You have substantial proven experience in Health and Safety management within a highly regulated environment, ideally gained within a utilities or infrastructure environment. Proven experience in strategic H&S governance and policy development, with the ability to influence and guide at a senior leadership level. Influential stakeholder management skills, with the credibility and confidence to represent SGN effectively to regulators and external industry partners. An understanding of the Gas Safety (Management) Regulations, CDM Regulations, and all associated legislation relevant to our operations is preferred
