Summary: The Senior Geotechnical Design Engineer will work on a contract basis in Manchester, focusing on delivering innovative geotechnical design solutions for high-impact water and rail infrastructure projects. This role requires a strong background in geotechnics and civil engineering, with responsibilities including leading design efforts and mentoring junior staff. The position offers a hybrid working arrangement, allowing for a mix of office and remote work. The role is classified as outside IR35, emphasizing the importance of compliance with safety and quality standards in all design outputs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Produce detailed geotechnical and civil engineering design calculations and drawings.
  • Prepare site investigation briefs, technical reports, and project specifications.
  • Ensure design deliverables meet required safety, quality, and professional standards.
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers, graduates, and CAD technicians.
  • Conduct and contribute to formal design reviews, including meetings and technical presentations.
  • Accurately estimate time and resources for design activities and deliverables.
  • Implement and document changes to design packages in a structured manner.
  • Collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams to meet project milestones.

Key Skills:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in geotechnical and/or civil engineering design.
  • Strong background in geotechnics, including preparation of ground investigation specifications and interpretive reports.
  • Degree or HND in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Proficient in relevant engineering design software and IT tools.
  • Registered with a professional engineering body and actively pursuing chartership.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills with a focus on results, quality, and safety.
  • Committed to mentoring, collaboration, and continuous professional development.
  • Chartered Engineer status (advantageous but not essential).
  • Experience in the water and/or rail sectors.
  • Familiarity with construction methodologies, GI techniques, and regulated infrastructure environments.
  • Knowledge of engineering drawing standards and multi-disciplinary design practices.
