Senior Cobol Architect

Job description - the role

The Senior Cobol Architect will serve as a technical leader responsible for designing, governing, and modernizing enterprise Mainframe solutions.

This role requires deep expertise in Cobol-based applications, Mainframe architecture, Legacy modernization strategies, and integration with modern cloud and digital platforms.

The architect will work closely with business stakeholders, solution architects, development teams, and client leadership to deliver scalable and future-ready solutions.

What you'll do;

• Lead the architecture, design, and modernization of large-scale Cobol/Mainframe applications, ensuring scalability, performance, and alignment with business objectives.
• Define and implement Legacy transformation strategies, including application refactoring, API enablement, cloud integration, and platform migration initiatives.
• Provide technical leadership and governance across development teams, establishing best practices, coding standards, and architecture guidelines.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders, enterprise architects, and client leadership to translate business requirements into robust technology solutions.
• Conduct application assessments, architecture reviews, and performance optimization activities to reduce technical debt and improve system reliability.

The skills you'll need:

• Extensive experience in Mainframe application development and architecture.
• Experience in a solution or enterprise architecture role.
• Extensive experience with:
• Cobol
• JCL
• CICS
• DB2
• IMS
• VSAM
• z/OS
• TSO/ISPF
• Strong understanding of enterprise integration patterns and API architectures.
• Experience leading large-scale modernization or migration programs.
• Proven ability to engage with executive stakeholders and influence strategic decisions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
