Senior / Principal Civil Design Engineer - Water Wakefield (Hybrid) - Outside IR35
A well-established Civil Engineering and Utilities business with a strong and growing pipeline of work in the water sector is looking to bring in an experienced Senior or Principal Civil Design Engineer to support its integrated design team in Wakefield. Operating across Yorkshire and the wider UK, the business delivers a mix of infrastructure and non-infrastructure schemes, combining in-house design with Design & Build delivery.
This is a contract opportunity that would suit someone who enjoys being hands-on and properly involved in projects, rather than sitting at a distance. You'll play a key role in supporting the delivery of water and wastewater schemes from feasibility and concept through to detailed design, construction and commissioning, working alongside a collaborative and down-to-earth team.
Day to day, you'll be coordinating civil and drainage design activities, preparing and reviewing drawings, calculations, specifications and reports, and helping to keep projects moving in line with programme and client expectations. There's also an element of overseeing design packages, checking work and supporting more junior team members, but without the weight of a heavily managerial position.
You'll be working closely with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders, helping to resolve technical challenges, maintain strong working relationships and ensure designs remain practical and deliverable. Your experience will be valued in guiding projects, improving design quality and contributing to the overall efficiency of delivery.
They're looking for someone with a strong background in civil design within the UK water sector, with experience across areas such as drainage, clean water networks, pipelines, rising mains or treatment works. You'll likely be Chartered or working towards it, but more importantly, confident in your ability to come in, pick things up quickly and make an impact.
Experience with tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D and drainage or hydraulic modelling software is expected, along with a good understanding of water industry standards and how projects are delivered within a Design & Build environment.
The role offers a hybrid setup, with a few days a week in the Wakefield office to stay connected with the team, alongside flexibility where needed. The contract is expected to sit outside IR35, with a solid pipeline of secured work and a team that values straightforward communication and practical engineering.
