Senior Back End Engineer
Digital Skills are looking for an experienced Senior Back End Engineer to join an established technology environment, working on scalable services and complex distributed systems.
This is a hands-on engineering role suited to someone who can quickly understand an existing codebase, make pragmatic technical decisions and deliver production-ready solutions with limited supervision. You will also contribute to architecture, engineering standards and the development of other engineers.
Key responsibilities
- Design and develop scalable Back End services and APIs
- Lead the delivery of medium to large technical initiatives
- Build resilient, observable and fault-tolerant systems
- Produce clean, maintainable and well-tested Java code
- Review technical designs and contribute to architectural decisions
- Investigate complex production issues and complete root-cause analysis
- Improve platform performance, stability and scalability
- Support code reviews and mentor other engineers
- Contribute to CI/CD, deployment automation and operational tooling
- Collaborate with product, Front End and infrastructure teams
Essential experience
- Strong commercial Back End engineering experience
- Advanced Java and Spring Boot skills
- Proven experience designing and building REST APIs
- Strong knowledge of microservices and distributed architectures
- Kubernetes and containerised application experience
- Kafka or comparable messaging technology
- Relational databases and data modelling
- CI/CD pipelines and production deployments
- Monitoring, logging, alerting and observability
- Unit, integration and end-to-end testing
- Strong production debugging and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to lead technical delivery independently
- Confident communication, code review and mentoring capability
