Senior Azure Data Engineer

The Role

Working within the Technology team, you'll design, build and optimise Azure-based data solutions that are secure, scalable and production-ready.

You'll be responsible for developing robust data pipelines, integrating data from multiple internal and third-party systems, modelling data for reporting and analytics, and ensuring high levels of data quality, governance and performance.

You'll collaborate closely with architects, BI teams, application teams and business stakeholders to deliver reliable data solutions that support operational, financial and client reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain Azure Data Factory pipelines
  • Build and optimise Azure Databricks solutions using PySpark and SQL
  • Support a large-scale enterprise data migration programme
  • Develop scalable ETL/ELT processes and data ingestion frameworks
  • Design data models using Medallion Architecture and dimensional modelling techniques
  • Integrate data from multiple internal and external systems
  • Deliver curated datasets to support Power BI reporting and analytics
  • Optimise Spark jobs, SQL performance and cloud platform efficiency
  • Ensure data quality, governance, lineage and traceability across the platform
  • Work collaboratively with business stakeholders, architects and BI teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, technical standards and best practice across the data platform

About You

You'll be an experienced Azure Data Engineer who enjoys solving complex data challenges and building modern cloud-based data platforms.

You'll be comfortable working across the full data engineering lifecycle, from data ingestion and transformation through to modelling, optimisation and production support.

You'll have strong communication skills and enjoy working closely with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to deliver practical business solutions.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong commercial experience with Azure Databricks and PySpark
  • Azure Data Factory
  • Advanced SQL, including query optimisation and complex transformations
  • ETL / ELT pipeline development
  • Dimensional modelling (Kimball, Star Schemas)
  • Experience building modern Azure data platforms
  • Cloud data migration experience
  • Strong understanding of data quality, governance and production support
  • Experience working with Azure Data Lake technologies
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills

Desirable Experience

  • Delta Lake
  • Power BI optimisation
  • Azure DevOps / CI/CD
  • ITIL environments
  • Experience working with retail, hospitality or consumer goods data
  • Metadata management and data lineage
