Senior Auditor
Summary: The role of Senior Internal Auditor is an interim position with a Local Authority in the North East, aimed at experienced auditors with a strong background in public sector audit. The successful candidate will lead and conduct audits across various council services, ensuring effective risk management and governance. This position offers a flexible working schedule and requires a standard DBS check. The contract duration is expected to be a minimum of six months.
Key Responsibilities:
- Planning and delivering internal audit assignments from start to finish
- Undertaking system audits, follow-ups and reviews across council services
- Interviewing officers and senior managers to assess systems, controls and risks
- Drafting testing strategies, completing audit testing and maintaining working papers
- Preparing clear audit reports with findings, risks and recommendations
- Advising senior managers on risk, control and governance matters
- Supporting investigations into suspected fraud, error or corruption where required
- Liaising with senior officers, external auditors, regulators and other stakeholders
Key Skills:
- Recent internal audit experience, ideally within Local Government
- Strong understanding of internal audit frameworks, controls and risk management
- Experience producing and presenting audit findings/reports to senior officers
- Ability to work independently and manage audits to agreed timescales
- CIA / internal audit qualification desirable, though strong relevant experience will be considered

Senior Internal Auditor - Interim
Spencer Clarke Group are working closely with a Local Authority in the North East to appoint an interim Senior Internal Auditor.
This is a great opportunity for an experienced internal auditor with strong Local Authority / public sector audit experience to support a busy Internal Audit and Risk Management service.
Role details:
- Rate: £200 - £400 per day, negotiable depending on experience
- Contract: Interim 6 months +
- Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday
- Flexi-time available, generally between 7am and 7pm
- Standard DBS required
- Working pattern / onsite requirement: TBC
